Teeth Implants Change Status of Non-candidates
By Carolyn Susman, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, March 10, 2004
A new procedure that can give patients replacement teeth in less
than 24 hours is now available.
Dr. Jeffrey Ganeles of Boca Raton perfected the TeethToday procedure
and has performed nearly 1,000 TeethToday implants on more than
250 patients. He claims a 95 percent success rate and says people
who were previously told they weren't candidates for dental implants
have been good candidates for the procedure.
Ganeles uses a threaded titanium anchor to give the replacement
tooth a solid and lasting foundation.
The cost is about 10 to 25 percent more than typical dental implants.
The procedure starts at about $2,300 per tooth. The differential
reflects the implant parts and temporary teeth not included in typical
dental implant fees, according to Ganeles.

Dental
procedure gives Springs woman her bite back

Dorothy Jones, 94, isn't afraid to drive her car to the church
where she volunteers or to take friends many years younger out and
about. So when she developed problems with her teeth, it came as
no surprise to friends that she wasn't afraid to go to the dentist
either.
Jones had six teeth extracted and new ones implanted just three
days later, thanks to Boca Raton periodontist Dr. Jeffrey Ganeles,
who used a technique he created called "immediate load implants."
In the past, patients faced months of dental work or were forced
to live with dentures or bridges.
"It didn't hurt at all and in two days I had new teeth,"
said Jones, a Long Island, N.Y., native who retired after 35 years
teaching kindergarten and moved to Coral Springs 16 years ago.
It was a far cry from a similar procedure Jones had 10 years earlier.
"It was just murder to go through. It took months to get it
done," she said.
"They walk in feeling self-conscious and apprehensive, with
a mouth that doesn't function properly and a facial appearance that
doesn't look right," said Ganeles, who was recently featured
on the ABC television show Extreme Makeover. "They walk out
with new teeth and can actually go out and eat that night."
Accordingly, Jones is smiling again and eating foods she has long
avoided such as corn on the cob. The quick procedure meant she didn't
have to miss any of the activities that she devotes her time to,
such as her work helping clients at the Stephen Ministry of First
Presbyterian Church in Pompano Beach.
"It certainly changed my diet 100 percent," said Jones,
who has resumed a diet centered on fresh fruits and vegetables and
very little red meat.
Ganeles came up with the idea for the procedure, dubbed TeethToday,
after many time-consuming implantations.
"Over 15 years I perfected the technique through experience
and discussion with others," said Ganeles, who practices at
the Florida Institute for Periodontics & Dental Implants in
Boca Raton.
According to the National Institutes of Health, at least 113 million
Americans are missing one or more teeth. By age 50, the average
American has lost 12 teeth, the NIH says.
The procedure works by implanting a "bone-friendly" threaded
titanium anchor into the mouth to give the new tooth a foundation,
Ganeles said.

JEFF GANELES
It doesn’t cost anywhere near a million dollars, but
patients of Dr. Jeffrey Ganeles of the Florida Institute for
Periodontics & Dental Implants sure feel like a million
after he and his team do their magic.
Ganeles conducted a landmark study that pioneered a technique
called “Teeth Today” –a procedure that reduces
the time required for patients to receive fixed replacement
teeth with dental implants. What used to take upwards of six
months now takes as little as 24 hours. Think about it. One
day, you have a bridge and/or teeth removed. The next day,
you’re eating ribs and corn!
Ganeles worked in tandem with other Institute partners and
colleagues in conducting the study and perfecting the “Teeth
Today” technique. They include Drs. Marvin M. Rosenberg,
D.D.S.; Robert L. Holt, D.M.D., Ph.D., Frederic J. Norkin,
D.M.D.; and Linda H. Reichman, R.D.H. Together, they have
revolutionized what used to be known as a tedious, drawn-out
procedure. Anyone who has even had a crown replaced can just
imagine what a boom for the dental community this is.

Ganeles is considered by many to be among the “Who’s
Who” of dentistry. After receiving his bachelor of science
from Cornell University, he earned his doctor of dental medicine
degree from Boston University, first in his class. After completing
his residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
and earning his certificate of advanced graduate study in
periodontics from the University of Pennsylvania School of
Dental Medicine, Ganeles became a diplomate of the American
Board of Periodontology. He is an active member of the International
Team for Oral Implantology (ITI) Waldenburg, Switzerland,
serves as a consultant with The Cleveland Clinic and is a
member of the Clinic’s Cleft and Craniofacial Team in
Fort Lauderdale. The list of credentials, not to mention publishing
credits, goes on.
A prominent dentist and husband of one patient said in a
letter to Ganeles, “I want to express my thanks to you
and your office. To say that my wife’s treatment was
anything short of miraculous would be an understatement. It’s
hard to believe that within two days, she had bridge removed,
six teeth pulled, six implants placed and experienced no true
postoperative pain.”
The Florida Institute for Periodontics & Dental Implants
has been on the cutting edge of its profession for the past
40 years. Its work is world-renowned and its consulting services
extend to many organizations. The practice conducts more than
4,000 procedures annually at offices in Boca Raton and West
Palm Beach.

Boca periodontist debuts on ‘Extreme Makeover’
Published Thursday, February 12, 2004
by Kelli Kennedy
Adult tooth loss is nothing to smile about – especially
in a society where celebrity smiles are almost as high wattage as
their million dollar salaries. Advertising plugs for dozens of teeth
whitening products only make matters worse for the 113 million Americans
missing teeth.
But with the help of one Boca Raton periodontist and the producers
of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover,” one woman, who had
lived without any upper teeth for 27 years, finally had something
to smile about.
The 47-year old Southern California woman, whose identity will
be kept secret until the show airs, said goodbye to her embarrassing
dentures and was given a full set of pearly whites from Dr. Jeffrey
Ganeles.
“In a society where a great smile is a calling card, imagine
what it’s like being embarrassed to smile or not being able
to eat or chew properly. People with bad teeth are often withdrawn,
embarrassed and self-conscious,” Ganeles said. “This
procedure does far more than restore a mouth by giving someone great
looking teeth. It’s really about restoring dignity: giving
individuals who have suffered for many years the means to solve
a long-standing set of problems and a reason to smile and feel good
about themselves.”
The new procedure, coined by Ganeles as TeethToday , gives patients
replacement teeth or a full mouth of teeth in less than 24 hours-
a far cry from the traditional dental implant process which entails
anywhere from 3-12 months and dozens of office visits. Patients
are also forced to wait for many months to determine if the implant
anchor has properly bonded to the jawbone before replacement teeth
can be affixed. But after implementing a “bone-friendly”
threaded titanium anchor to the procedure, Ganeles said he is able
to immediately give the replacement tooth a solid and lasting foundation.
Because the procedure is much more intricate, Ganeles is one of
a handful of doctors performing the surgery around the country.
After performing his patient’s surgery in November, which
was filmed by the “Extreme Makeover” team, Ganeles said
the results were more than emotional.
“She was just overjoyed. She was overwhelmed. There was
a lot of tears,” said Ganeles, who has performed more than
800 TeethToday implants at the Florida Institute for Periodontics
& Dental Implants.
“It was really a great moment. It’s just wonderful
to have a procedure that can help people like that- to be able to
reverse years of embarrassment and turn it into somebody’s
asset is just a fabulous thing. I was very grateful for the opportunity.”
The Boca doctor rented out a private theatre at Muvico for a special
screening on the show, which airs Thursday night at 9 p.m.
“I’m really excited to see it, but I’m also
a little nervous because I have no idea what made it through the
editing process,” said Ganeles.
His appearance on “Extreme Makeover” marks the first
time ever that implant dentistry is getting prime-time attention.
The procedure, which Ganeles has been performing for seven years,
can cost anywhere from $3,000 for a single tooth to $35,000 for
a full set.

Life in the fast – and faster – lane
Feen on the Scene
Diane Feen
If you thought your life was on fast forward. Don’t fret.
You’re not alone.
According to the “24 hour MBA” by Alexander Hiam, the
average person works extra hours just to keep up with the 178 communication
he or she gets each day. And with work weeks extending form 40 to
48 hours (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics), it seems
we’re all in the express lane of life.
When we’re not reading or responding to our email messages,
we’re answering our cell phones, pagers, and beepers. When
we’re not scanning or faxing, we’re responding to instant
messages or text alerts. Because we seem to have more in common
with the Energizer Bunny than Einstein or Freud. South County merchants
are offering fast-paced services for lives that are wired for speed.
Gents, a downtown Boca Raton barbershop, is giving customers a
one-minute massage to go with their carefully sculptured haircuts.
Dr. Jeffrey Ganeles, a Boca Raton periodontist
at the Florida Institute for Periodontics & Dental Implants,
has perfected a speedy procedure for dental implants called “TeethToday®”
that can replace one tooth immediately or a full mouth of teeth
within 24 hours. According to Dr. Ganeles, patients are spared the
traditional six-week to six month healing period for temporary teeth
because of a new technology that permits dental implant placement
simultaneously with cemented acrylic provisional teeth.
Speed-minded patient Linda Sessler found glamour at the end of
Ganeles’ dental table.
“I transformed my worst liability into my best asset in one
day. My temporarys were so gorgeous, everyone wanted to know if
they could be restrung. The computer has conditioned us to think
that everything should be instantaneous: if we can perceive it,
then we want to achieve it in a moment.” said Sessler.
If exercise is one activity you would like to outsource, then relief
is on its way. Boca Raton is now home to tow new work-out facilities
that specialize in giving women an abbreviated exercise regime that
condenses a two-hour workout into 30 minutes. This is accomplished
with high-intensity circuit training machines that offer both cardiovascular
and strength training all at the same time. The two most popular
locations for this hit-and-run mode of trim-and-detox is Curves
(with three Boca locations) and Xpress Fitness in West Boca. Both
studios offer women (sorry, men), a chance to tone, condition, burn
calories and lose weight and inches in a matter of months. Curves
owner Debbie Stein said she lost 80 pounds and 40 inches in six
months by working with Weight Watchers and Curves.
If you’re looking for true love in record time, the call
Boca Raton based Solumates In SEVEN. The company’s local speed-dating
technique offers 14 men and 14 women the chance to meet and greet
in round-robin style for seven minutes.
The group holds weekly functions at Oceans 11 Restaurant in downtown
Boca from 7:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Whether you’re 25 or 75,
the folks at Soulmates have a potential match for you.
For a more volume approach to finding true love, check out HurryDate.com.
Their fast-paced dating technique moves at lightning speed promising
25 dates a three minutes each. Both companies give scorecards to
guests so that compatible mates can reconvene at a less locomotive
speed in the future.
If you have a receding hairline and don’t have time for hair
transplants, there’s an immediate solution form Toppik. This
spray-on hair is made from organic fibers of keratin protein to
give users a full head of hair within 30 seconds. Owner Mark Kress
spent 16 years perfecting a speedy solution for hair loss, and now
boasts of one million customers that include celebrities, news anchors
and business people. Boca salons that carry Toppik include Spalano,
Hair Designs by Louann and Sofia’s.
Since we’ve become so adept at multi-tasking, we need our
meals at flash-pan speed. To help with this Herculean task, Tyson
and Hormel have just introduced a six-minute pot roast, five-minute
pineapple-glazed ham, nine-minute meat loaf and five-minute pork
tenderloin in teriyaki sauce. According to the NPD Group, 49 percent
of all dinners are made in less than 30 minutes.
If it seems that your life has evolved into one big Super Bowl
parade with a perpetual half-time celebration, you might want to
slow down. But don’t count on talking to a therapist to find
out how. The insurance industry has condensed patient benefits to
fit into a shorter treatment year. According to clinical psychologist
Dr. Jeffery Goldel, traditional 45-minute therapy sessions are now
being boiled down to 20 minutes.
“Insurance companies are speeding up therapy to provide eight
weeks of therapy per year instead of once a week. This is having
a negative effect on children. They have so much pent up energy
because they’re involved in a whirlwind of activity that’s
causing them stress and tension.” said Goldel.
Not to worry. For a few bucks you can pick up “The One Minute
Manger” or “The one-Minute Millionaire” at you
local bookstore.
That is if you have the time.

Word of Mouth
Boca Raton Institute replaces teeth while you wait
By Dale M. King – staff writer
Sandy and Eli Gaynor of Boca Raton are flashing bright smiles these
days.
But it wasn’t always true. A mouth injury at age 17 forced
Sandy Gaynor to get dentures that never seemed to please her. And
while her husband opted for moveable bridges and then an early form
of dental implants, he wasn’t particularly satisfied either.
A dramatic new method of installing dental implants – created
by a team of Boca Raton doctors – has made eating and smiling
easier for the retirees from New Jersey. And the process is available
to all who want to improve their teeth.
Doctors Jeffrey Ganeles, Robert Holt and Marvin Rosenberg last
year created a radical new method that reduces the time required
for patients to receive permanent replacement teeth with dental
implants from six months to 24 hours.
The immediate placement of the implants also eliminates the need
for parients to wear uncomfortable dentures over sore and healing
gums.
“The demands of work, travel and extracurricular activities
don’t allow for our patients’ teeth to be on hold for
six months.” said Ganeles, a doctor and co-founder of the
Florida Institute for Periodontics & Dental Implants at 3020
Military Trail, Boca Raton.
“The Teeth Today procedure allows our patients to receive
new teeth in a day, so they don’t have to miss tomorrow’s
family outing, tee time or planned vacation.”
Ganeles said he took a turn from traditional thinking about dental
implants. It was long thought that the titanium screws that hold
until they were firmly settled in the gums – a process that
takes three to six months. The Boca doctor said he installs the
screws and teeth in one day.
And as long as they don’t move, there’s no need for
a lengthy recuperation.
The Florida Institute can replace individual or several teeth at
a time. Bones in the jaw will heal around titanium, he said, since
the body perceives that material as tooth root.
Sandy Gaynor said she went to four doctors who refused to replace
her teeth before she found Ganeles, “This man is a genius,
he’s a remarkable technician,” she said.
As part of the replacement process, the doctor had to graft a section
of bone from her leg to the area below her sinus before implanting
the upper teeth.
Ganeles said if a tooth falls out and is not replaced, the bone
underneath will deteriorate.
“Implants are far superior to natural teeth, as long as you
maintain the integrity” said Eli Gaynor.
He said another doctor installed his dental implants about 10 years
ago, “I had problems with the screws breaking,” he said.
“Today, technology is far superior.
Eli Gaynor said he “did a lot of soul-searching” before
he had the implants, “I didn’t want anyone drilling
in my mouth.” But he was so dissatisfied with false teeth;
he said he wanted “something more secure.”
Word of the Teeth Today method spread quickly in the dental community
after the Boca Raton doctors published their findings last June
in a trade journal. “We’ve had numerous inquiries from
patients across the country,” Ganeles said.
“In the past,” he said, “procedures like TeethToday
would have been considered heresy. Now, with legitimate studies
and documentation, doctors are realizing that they can reliably
replace their patients’ teeth in the most convenient, comfortable,
time-efficient way possible.”
Established in 1961, the newly named Florida Institute for Periodontics
and Dental Implants conducts more than 4,000 surgical procedures
a year at offices in Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. It can be reached
by calling (561) 912-9993.
