Glossary & Lexicon

In addition to a glossary of terms, we have spent many years refining and developing a lexicon that we use with our patients. This consists of a patient-centered “language” that helps them feel comfortable and safe. This language describes and defines who we are, explains certain aspects of our practice and clarifies key aspects of our TeethToday® procedure. The lexicon (below) is provided for your convenience as it includes phases and language you may find helpful to accurately describe our practice and innovative procedures. Thank you for your consideration and please Contact Us if you need further information. We hope the information provided here makes your job easier.

Imaging and Diagnostics:

Panoramic x-ray:
An x-ray that provides a 2- dimensional view of the full mouth – sometimes referred to as a ”pano”

CT scan:
A 3-dimensional computer scan image or digital x-ray of the whole upper or lower jaw

With a 3-dimensional digital x-ray and computer guided implant placement technology, the doctor can swiftly perform the correct procedure and can now accurately and predictably place the implant exactly where desired, thus creating as little stress to the body as possible.

To achieve the best esthetic result the entire facial symmetry is studied to determine whether facial features, including the teeth, are properly aligned.

Name and Acronym of our Practice:

• Florida Institute for Periodontics & Dental Implants

• FLIPDI

Registered Trademark:

When referring to the procedure of “immediate-load” or “immediate restoration” use TeethToday® instead.

TeethToday® is the registered trademark for this innovative procedure that changes people’s lives virtually overnight. It is also known as “immediate load” or “immediate restoration.” It is the gold standard for giving a person a new mouth and a radically improved appearance comfortably, quickly and successfully. It is distinctly different from the conventional methods of placing dental implants, which are extremely labor intensive for the doctor and long, involved and inconvenient for the patient.

Procedure:

The TeethToday® procedure is minimally invasive and virtually painless because Dr. Ganeles and the Institute’s specialists have extensive experience with successful dental implant placement. Dr. Ganeles has achieved such great success and predictable results because he is “extremely accurate in placing the implants to assure bio-mechanically sound, esthetic and secure restorations.”

Dr. Ganeles has proven that optimizing safety leads to successful results. The more thorough the planning and evaluation, the more accurate the placement of each implant - which equals shorter procedure time, minimal soft tissue manipulation, less swelling and quicker healing. Our patients are often given an oral sedative to be taken prior to coming into the office for their TeethToday® procedure. This immediately and completely calms the patient and leads to a level of deep relaxation. Consequently, our patients seldom remember anything about the procedure itself and typically emerge from the procedure as calmly as they entered it.

Please use the word “procedure” rather than the word “surgery” when describing TeethToday®.

Dr. Jeffrey Ganeles Quotes:

“Implant dentistry can give you teeth that look, feel and function like the real thing!”

“We don’t just place dental implants. We replace missing or untreatable teeth with esthetic,
secure and new teeth.”

Advantages of the TeethToday® Method:

Convenience

“Implants are secure, you can’t lose or misplace permanent teeth!”

Reduces Treatment Time

“Using the conventional implant method can involve months or years. With TeethToday® the patient receives new teeth in less then 24 hours with no emotional trauma and no delay. Why wouldn’t you do it this way if you could?”

Patient Comfort & Ease (important because many people are dental phobic)

“Patients state their fears and concerns articulately and poignantly. Many times, they’ve endured decades of problems with their teeth, including frightening – and often painful - dental procedures and this has resulted in literally millions of otherwise healthy individuals who are dental phobic. "

“They truly want good teeth and a normal, attractive smile but can’t imagine how this can ever be achieved. As a result, they often feel hopeless, embarrassed and helpless. "

“For these individuals, TeethToday® is a gift they never imagined they could have – truly a second chance to have a normal mouth, good teeth and an aesthetically pleasing facial appearance. "

“My work is intensely gratifying for this reason alone. I see it as my job to minimize trauma, keep patients out of pain and make the recovery process easier and virtually painless."

“And I see it as my mission to let as many people as possible know that there’s hope for them – that they can eat normally, smile proudly and have the dental health they deserve and thought they’d never have. That’s what this procedure offers. It’s not just restoring someone’s smile … it’s restoring dignity. That’s the bottom line.”

Esthetics (It is important to look beautiful, but even more important to restore a mouth so it is now healthy and strong.)

“She [the patient] had her mouth restored (with the TeethToday® procedure and we restored her facial balance in the process.”

Patient Satisfaction

“Our patients are so excited and pleased with their results. One man told us, ‘Being able to have teeth right away was a big deal to me.’ He speaks for all of our patients.”

“Here’s a man who was deathly afraid of wearing dentures. Now he looks better and he’s lost infected gum tissue. He not only has new, permanent teeth…he’s also gone from having an infection to having a non-infected mouth.” [This is another example of why the TeethToday® procedure is good for patients’ health. People can resolve their infected gum problems in one day following immediate restoration.]

“Patients with gum disease or many cavities [often] do much better with implants than with their own natural teeth.”

Candidates for TeethToday®

“The immediate load procedure does require a healthy patient, but this means simply that the individual is medically stable. So we’ve treated patients from 20 to as old as their nineties.”

The Patients

“When a person has bad teeth, they are very often withdrawn, embarrassed and self-conscious. They have a hard time communicating with others. They’re also physically uncomfortable. They can’t eat many of the foods they long to eat. A broken mouth impacts every part of a person’s life. This is what life is like for those who find their way to our practice. These are the people we work for – to fix what’s broken, to make it right. That’s what we’re all about.”

The Solution

“Patients demand better options and they deserve a better solution. Now they have it.”

“I wish you could see what’s going on here in south Florida at our Institute. Our patients are absolutely blown away!”

“The patient walked in in trouble, and walked out happy.”

Glossary of Technical Terms:

Edentulous:
Patients who are totally edentulous are missing their teeth.

Osseointegration:
The process whereby the bone fuses or bonds with the titanium implant. The bone holds the titanium implant in a way that is actually stronger than the original tooth root giving the new tooth a solid and lasting foundation.

Restoration:
When it’s time to receive your permanent crowns, you will be in the restoration phase of the process. Your teeth are being restored.

The Implant:
Is made of titanium and is used to replace the root of a tooth. It is precisely positioned into the jawbone, where it becomes the foundation for the new tooth. When the new bone grows around the implant, the new teeth become permanent. Implant shapes and surfaces are designed to bond quickly and predictably with surrounding bone.

Bio-mechanically:
More than four decades of research has shown that titanium is ideal in terms of its biological compatibility with the human body. Studies show that the earliest patients treated with TeethToday® implants are fully osseo-integrated and continue to have good dental function.

The Abutment:
It is a cap like structure that is about one-third the size of the implant. It provides the post on which the crown will be placed.

The Crown:
The crown (caps), or prosthetic tooth, is also commonly referred to as the restoration. Crowns are custom-designed and shaded so that they look like natural teeth.

Prosthesis:
This term refers to the patient’s new “man-made” teeth. Prosthesis could refer to a single tooth, or a fixed bridge, both of which can be used with TeethToday®.

Bridge:
Several teeth, bonded together, and used to fill the space where natural teeth are missing. A fixed bridge is commonly referred to as a “fixed prosthesis” and should be distinguished from a removable prosthesis or a removable denture which rests on the gum tissue.

Denture:
See “Bridge” above. Upper dentures are held in place by suction against the palate. Lower dentures are held in place by gravity. Partial dentures can be clipped to teeth if all teeth are not missing. Dentures can be snapped to implants to improve their stability in the mouth.

Immediately Loaded Implant Procedure:
The TeethToday® procedure is referred to as “loading” or placing the teeth at the same time the implant posts are positioned. It is an accelerated process in which the patient leaves the dentist’s office with “teeth” within 24 hours. No second surgery, no months of waiting - an immediate, permanent and cosmetic solution. Often the immediate teeth are made of acrylic and need to be replaced with permanent ones made of more durable materials like porcelain and metal several months after healing is complete.

Provisionals:
These are the initial (and temporary) teeth that are placed on the implant. They look excellent but are not intended to last forever. Depending on the individual patient, they may last a year or more. Generally, the patient will go to their regular dentist or to a dentist specializing in cosmetic procedures to replace the provisional teeth with permanent teeth (crowns) that are designed to last. The implant or titanium “root” is permanent from the time it is fist placed.
